PhD Position (m/f/x) on development and engineering of reactors for microbial electrosynthesis | 20 Feb 2021

The successful candidate will work closely together with the other PhD student that will be in the Rosenbaum group to realize the overall objectives of the project ESCAPE (Establishing a scalable bioprocess reactor platform for cathodic obligate anaerobic electrobiosynthesis). For the PhD project an established and patented electrobioreactor will serve as starting point for further developments by combining experimental work with theoretical considerations. The work will involve biochemical engineering, material science, and related fluid dynamics modelling. Using 3D printing for rapid prototyping, reactor components for batch and flow operation at the litre-scale will be developed. The reactor will be also modified for hosting the process developed by the Rosenbaum group as well as other example processes of microbial electrosynthesis. Thereby, reactor benchmarking will be the leitmotif of the research agenda. Finally, a complete anaerobic electrobioreactor at 1-3 L scale will be set into place and operated.

Your profile:

  • Master degree or equivalent in biochemistry, biotechnology, chemistry, electrochemistry, biosystems engineering, process engineering, biotechnology, or related subjects
  • Knowledge and laboratory skills in basic electrochemistry methods and bioprocess engineering are highly advantageous
  • Experience with bioelectrochemical systems and electrochemistry will be beneficial
  • Experimental creativity and hands-on problem solving attitude is a prerequisite
  • Strong self-motivation for scientific work in an interdisciplinary project and high reliability and resilience are required
  • Proficient in English speaking and writing
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
