Feed efficiency and welfare of pigs depend on gut function and health. These traits are difficult to measure but they are of great importance for sustainable pig production. Intensive pig production systems in much of Europe are under scrutiny with respect to animal welfare and environmental impact. The task comprises the participation in a joint research project funded in the framework of the newly granted European project 101004770 ‘PIGWEB’ (H2020-INFRAIA-2020-1). The appointee will work on the development of proxies and novel indicators of gut function and health that are not or minimally-invasive (compared to ‘gold standards’) using cutting edge methodology. The appointee will obtain a doctoral degree from a German University.

Knowledge on nutrition, metabolism and gastrointestinal physiology is essential. Candidates who have previous experience with pig experimental work are desired.
